STEPHENSON TEAM WINS STATE SENIOR BRAIN GAMES
FREEPORT – A team representing a Stephenson County organization won a state championship this week. The Senior Resource Center’s Senior Brain Games team from the Stephenson County Office won the 2018 Association of Illinois Senior Centers Senior Brain Games Championship. Team members are Dennis and Susan Yorka of Freeport and Neil Kijek of Pearl City. They call themselves Team Pierogi.
The team-based trivia competition was held at the Illinois State Fair on Monday’s Senior Day.
Also competing at the State Senior Brain Games was the Senior Resource Center’s Jo Daviess County team, which placed third. Team members were Mary and Jack Stayner and Nancy Koeller. They were Team Connections.
“We are so proud of all our contestants who represented the Senior Resource Center at the State Senior Brain Games,” said Sue Lambert, Senior Resource Center executive director. “They exhibited teamwork, intelligence and grace under pressure plus were just fun to watch. The wealth of knowledge all teams displayed just goes to show that our seniors are among some of the smartest people in the world.”
Lambert also encourages the public to stop by and see the 3 ½ foot trophy Team Pierogi won. It is currently displayed in the lobby of the Senior Resource Center at 206 E. Stephenson St. in Freeport.
“Seniors are not recognized often enough for their achievements. When they are, we like to show off the award,” Lambert said.
The Illinois State Senior Brain Games competition is a statewide program that provides Illinois senior citizens 50 and beyond the opportunity to showcase a lifetime of knowledge, memory and strategic skills while celebrating their years of experience. This effort is coordinated by the Association of Illinois Senior Centers, the Illinois Department on Aging and local senior organizations throughout Illinois
