Mount Vernon School District 80 students suspended 647 times in a single school year

Mount Vernon School District 80 reported 647 suspensions for 2016-17, according to the latest student discipline report by the Illinois State Board of Education.

According to the report, the district expelled or suspended 647 students during the year. That equates to 37.6 percent of the 1,719 students enrolled.

Of the 472 in-school suspensions, 380 were given to boys and 92 were given to girls, all of whom were elementary or middle schoolers.

The district reported that most in-school suspensions were given for unspecified reasons. The category includes 420 incidents. There were 51 incidents of violence without physical injury. For 251 incidents, students were suspended for 1-3 days.

Of the 175 out-of-school suspensions, 150 were given to boys and 25 were given to girls, all of whom were elementary or middle schoolers.

The district reported that most out-of-school suspensions were given for unspecified reasons. The category includes 104 incidents. There were 51 incidents of violence without physical injury. For 89 incidents, students were suspended for 1-3 days.
