BENTON CHAMBER OF COMMERCE INC: Cycle1 Cycling Studio Business of the Year

Businyr

Benton Chamber Of Commerce Inc issued the following announcement on Jan. 10.

Cycle1 Cycling Studio launched in February of 2015 under the premise of members come first. Founding coaches, Lynn Jackman, Greg Shelton, Angie Hughes and Lee Messersmith began with a vision of 1 Community, 1 Mission, 1 Life. The goal, through small group heart rate based training, was to meet people where they were, help them start where they could and help them own and live a fitness lifestyle.

The core programs for Cycle1 were (and still are) Spin and TRX. While already a few locations in Franklin County that had Spin programs, Cycle1 is the first in the area to introduce TRX Training. For the first 2 years, Cycle1 called the back half of the Rend Lake Cross fit building home. Seeing growth and success, Cycle1 had outgrown this space and, in May of 2017, purchased and moved into the former Terry’s Jaguar building located at 117 E. Smith St. This new location allowed for dedicated TRX space, multiple restrooms, locker rooms, a small retail area plus rental space and room for growth. Moving into this new location helped Cycle1 achieve the status of “Certified TRX Training Center”. Cycle1 is the only studio in Southern Illinois to hold this distinction.

After a year at this new location, Cycle1 was fortunate to acquire bike brands Cannondale, Schwinn and GT. Having the ability to sell bikes has helped Cycle1 make a stronger connection between the indoor and outdoor fitness experience. Having bikes in-house has also allowed Cycle1 to offer repair service and the ability to rent bikes to locals and guests to Rend Lake.

Under the mission of 1 Community, Cycle1 has supported a number of organizations and participated in number of yearly events. Cycle1 has had a yearly presence at the Rend Lake Water Festival with this past year having the first (and very wet) Slow Roll Glow Ride to the Benton Community Park. Cycle1 has also attended/participated in the Benton Middle School Health Fair and the Rend Lake College Children’s Health Fair. Cycle1 sponsors and runs in partnership with the Rend Lake Corps of Engineers, the annual Bike Rodeo. The bike rodeo is a great event that helps kids understand bikes, bike safety and rules of the road. Lastly, Cycle1 has been a sponsor for the St. Nicholas Brewery Cycling Team. This regional cycling team, based in DuQuoin, IL, has grown to over 35 members from all over Southern Illinois. They have created, as well as support and sponsor, multiple cycling events in Southern Illinois.

Looking ahead, the core for Cycle1 will always be Spin and TRX. These two are the hub of the wheel with programs/events/offerings as the spokes. We will be expanding our retail cycling offerings as well as expanding our service/repair area. We will continue investing in Southern Illinois to build/develop a cycling culture through activities and events. There are also conversations and plans regarding offering some additional group fitness options that would be congruent alongside Spin and TRX. Lastly, Cycle1 will always be about its members and its community as it looks for ways to connect them to owning a fitness lifestyle. This could be through classes offered, group bike rides in and around Southern Illinois, classes/clinics on bike repair and safety or through supporting local organizations promoting healthy lifestyles. We will always be about being 1 Community (we’re all in this together), 1 Mission (to own and live a healthy lifestyle), 1 Life (it’s the only one we have so make the most of it).
