Ewing Township issued the following announcement on March 22.
The following statement should be attributed to Ken Gauthier, 2018 Michigan Townships Association President and Sanborn Township (Alpena Co.) Supervisor:
Townships already spend more than $200 million a year on roads and bridges even though they aren’t required to do so by law. Michigan road conditions put residents at risk, result in exorbitant repair costs, and harm the reputation, economic prosperity and quality of life of our state—and its communities. Today, the Michigan Townships Association (MTA) Executive Committee voted to support Gov. Gretchen Whitmer’s plan to increase funding for roads, but there needs to be a fairer allocation of new funds for local roads as well.
MTA recognizes that the proposal includes a significant increase for Michigan’s gas tax. However, given how dire the situation has become, we also believe that significant measures are necessary to repair our state’s roads, which have been allowed to deteriorate to among the worst in the nation. MTA supports measures to raise the necessary dollars to fix our roads, and will work in the upcoming months with the administration, the legislature and other organizations to ensure that local roads receive a fair share of increased funding.
