The price of local government in 2016: Franklin County

The Franklin County budget was $23.42 million for its 2016 fiscal year.

That's a decrease of 1.2 percent from 2015, when the county spent $23.70 million.

Franklin County has a population of 39,156.

Since 2011, the Franklin County budget has grown by 5.7 percent, from $22.16 million. The county population has fallen 1.2 percent over the same period, from 39,627.

Salaries accounted for 32.5 percent of county spending in 2016. Franklin County property taxpayers paid $7.62 million for 462 full-time employees, or an average of $16,483 each, before their health care benefits and taxpayer-funded pension contributions.

In 2011, the county had 180 full-time employees and 50 part-time employees, and spent $6.48 million.
