The Jefferson County budget was $19.87 million for its 2016 fiscal year.

That's an increase of 26.2 percent from 2015, when the county spent $15.75 million.

Jefferson County has a population of 38,827.

Since 2001, the Jefferson County budget has grown by 58.6 percent, from $12.52 million. The county population has fallen three percent over the same period, from 40,045.

Salaries accounted for 32.8 percent of county spending in 2016. Jefferson County property taxpayers paid $6.52 million for 135 full-time employees and 43 part-time employees.

In 2001, the county had 102 full-time employees and 29 part-time employees, and spent $5.62 million.
