A meeting of the Policy Committee of the Board of Education of Sesser-Valier

Community Unit School District No. 196 was held on Tuesday, July 2, 2019 at 5:15 PM in the Sesser-Valier High School Conference Room. The meeting was called to order by President Teresa Stacey and roll for the Policy Committee was recorded by District Superintendent Jason Henry with the following results:

Committee Members Present: Ketteman, Rounds, Schoenbaechler, Stacey

Committee Members Absent: None

Staff Present: J. Henry

New Business:

Superintendent Henry reviewed the policy development and adoption process and summarized recommended modifications to the board policy manual (legal compliance updates, substantive modifications, and non-substantive rewrites of sixteen (16) board policies) and two (2) newly-proposed policies (4.190 & 6.185). Superintendent Henry and board committee members reviewed two (2) PRESS policy manual updates (Issue 100 dated February/March, 2019, & Issue 101 dated June, 2019). The committee reviewed and discussed each policy considered for initial adoption or update.

Superintendent Henry informed the committee that the recommended policies, if approved by the policy committee, would be slated for the regular July/August board policy adoption cycle. Committee members agreed, by consensus of those present, to forward the recommended policy updates to the full board for approval in July & August, 2019 (1st & 2nd readings), as presented.

The committee then discussed possible revisions to the student dress code for extracurricular events. The discussion centered primarily about dances, homecoming events, prom, concerts, and awards banquets. The committee agreed, by consensus, that no formal change in board policy or student handbooks was appropriate at this time, but rather, that district administrators could notify students/parents of certain dress code requirements for concerts & awards banquets via student/parent newsletters and other, regular means of student/parent communication.

Adjournment:

The meeting adjourned by consensus of those present at 7:15 PM.
