The Marion County Health Department is seeking volunteers in its ongoing battle against the coronavirus pandemic.

Individuals with medical and non-medical backgrounds are being sought, with each being given assurances that they will not be put in the position of assuming any hazardous responsibilities.

“The Health Department has well-trained staff who plan and set up emergency clinics, but help is needed from volunteers to fully staff the clinics so the public can quickly get the medication they need,” county health officials told SouthernIllinoisNow.com. “The role of volunteers is vital to ensure efficient and organized distribution of medication in a time of crisis.”

While all volunteers are advised to take part in an annual training, how much time they elect to volunteering will be left to each individual.

“We understand that volunteers are busy and may be able to devote only a limited amount of time to training and participation in preparedness exercises or drills,” leaders told SouthernIllinoisNow. “Volunteers choose the level to which they want to be involved.”

Organizers vow that every precaution will be taken to assure the health and safety of all volunteers.

“Your safety is our top priority,” county officials told SouthernIllinoisNow. “As volunteers, you and your family will be given medications to protect you from possible harm before you begin your volunteer duties. We will also provide you with any necessary personal protective equipment, such as gloves or masks.”

Those interested in volunteering are advised to contact Marion County Health Department MRC coordinator at 548-3878 or visit our website for additional information.
