Benton Community Consolidated School District 47 Board of Education met Oct. 26.

Here is the minutes provided by the board:

The Board of Education of Benton Community Consolidated School District No. 47, Franklin County, Illinois met in Regular Session on the 26th day of October 2020 at 5:00 p.m. President, Brad Wilson, called the meeting to order. Upon roll being called those members present were: Gary Messersmith, John Metzger, Bob Pankey, Lex Stewart, Derek Stowers, Brad Wilson, and Ron Winemiller.

No modification to the agenda.

4. CLOSED SESSION

4.1 Brad Wilson recommended that the Board adjourn to Closed Session for the purpose of discussing the appointment, employment, discipline or evaluation of personnel, litigation or potential litigation, collective bargaining issues, and to discuss discipline of a student.

John Metzger seconded the motion. Motion carried.

Closed Session convened at 5:03 p.m.

Gary Messersmith moved to reconvene to open session. Bob Pankey

seconded the motion. Upon roll being called the following vote was recorded: Gary Messersmith – yes, John Metzger – yes, Bob Pankey – yes, Lex Stewart – yes, Derek Stowers – yes, Brad Wilson – yes, and Ron Winemiller - yes. Motion carried.

Open Session reconvened at 5:51 p.m.

John Metzger moved to approve the Consent Agenda. The items assigned to the Consent Agenda were as follows:

8. NEW BUSINESS

8.1 John Metzger moved to consider approval of Paula Fuller’s Irrevocable Intent to Retire at the Conclusion of 2023-2024 School Year. Ron Winemiller seconded the motion. Upon roll being called the following vote was recorded: Gary Messersmith – yes, John Metzger – yes, Bob Pankey – yes, Lex Stewart – yes, Derek Stowers – yes, Brad Wilson – yes, and Ron Winemiller - yes. Motion carried.

8.2 Bob Pankey moved to consider approval of Resolution Abating Taxes Levied for the Year 2020 to Pay Series 2015 Alternate Revenue Stream Bonds. Lex Stewart seconded the motion. Upon roll being called the following vote was recorded: Gary Messersmith – yes, John Metzger – yes, Bob Pankey – yes, Lex Stewart – yes, Derek Stowers – yes, Brad Wilson – yes, and Ron Winemiller - yes. Motion carried.

10. STUDENT DISCIPLINE

10.1 Gary Messersmith moved to approve the Waiver of Expulsion Hearing rights agreement with Student #2020-1 and his parents and to expel the student for the period of October 26, 2020, through and including the last day of school for the 2020-2021 school year. Derek Stowers seconded the motion. Upon roll being called the following vote was recorded: Gary Messersmith – yes, John Metzger – yes, Bob Pankey – yes, Lex Stewart – yes, Derek Stowers – yes, Brad Wilson – yes, and Ron Winemiller - yes. Motion carried.

11. BOARD COMMENTS

∙ Ron Winemiller requested information regarding posting of Teacher and Assistant Principal Positions due to 2020-2021 retirements. Dr. Smith said that the process would begin in the next few months.

∙ Lex Stewart asked how students’ grades compared to previous academic years. Debra Blakey and Doug Jones indicated that in person students were doing well and they are in the process of contacting parents/guardians of remote learning students that are struggling or not completing assignments.

Derek Stowers moved to adjourn the meeting at 6:11 p.m. Ron Winemiller seconded the motion.
