City of Mt. Vernon issued the following announcement on Mar. 25.
The first leaf burning week this spring is from Monday through Sunday during the second full week of April, which will be from Monday, April 12 through Sunday, April 18. The second burn period for the spring is from Monday through Sunday during the second full week of May, which will be from Monday, May 10 through Sunday, May 16.
A leaf burning fire is permitted between the hours of sunrise and sunset each of those days.
No burning shall occur upon any public street, public sidewalk, drainage ditch within the public right-of-way nor any manhole cover or upon the property of another without written permission.
All types of fires must be physically attended by a person at least 18 years of age at all times.
Burning of any kind may be prohibited during any permitted leaf burning period by order of the Fire Chief due to high winds, dry conditions or other factors.
