City of Mason City Council Met March 8.

Here is the minutes provided by the council:

Call to order by Mayor Bruce Lowe at approximately 7:00 P.M.

Council members physically present were Gerald Mahin, Kevin Snyder, Danny Mason, Julie Mize, and Jim Miller. Treasurer Mike Griffin, Clerk Michele Whitehead, Superintendent Wayne Dixon, Chief Adam Anderson and Asst. Chief Justin Donovan were also present. Alderman Francis was absent.

The minutes of the February 22nd, 2021 Council meeting and the accounts payable and Treasurer’s report were approved.

R21-26 Alderman Mason moved, seconded by Alderman Mahin to approve the regular session minutes of the February 22ndh, 2021 meeting, the account payable and treasurer report.

Ayes: Alderpersons Mize, Snyder, Miller, Mahin, and Mason

Nays: None

Chairman declared motion carried.

Treasurer Mike Griffin explained to the Council about the interest on a loan that Down the Street bar has with the City. Due to Covid closures over the last year and loss of business, the City did not collect on the loan. The bar has now reopened and payments are resuming, however there is a small amount of past due interest. (Approximately 200.00) that the City can either add on to the end of the loan or could choose to just forgive that amount. The Council chose to forgive the interest past due.

R21-27 Alderman Mason moved, seconded by Alderperson Snyder to approve forgiving the past due interest accumulated during the Covid shut-down, in the amount of approximately $200.00.

Ayes: Alderpersons Mize, Snyder, Miller, Mahin, and Mason

Nays: None

Chairman declared motion carried.

Superintendent Dixon commented that he would like the Council to consider writing an ordinance that would require any company or utility that needs to boar around city right of ways be required to obtain a permit. The ordinance committee will continue working on writing the ordinance.

Superintendent Dixon also requested permission to purchase a new garage door opener for one of the Public Works buildings. The cost is approximately $1400.00. Permission was given

R21-28 Alderman Miller moved, seconded by Alderperson Mize to approve the purchase of a new garage door opener in the amount of approximately $1400.00

Ayes: Alderpersons Mize, Snyder, Miller, Mahin, and Mason

Nays: None

Chairman declared motion carried.

Alderman Miller informed the Council that he received a letter from IDOT regarding Rt.10/Chestnut st being repaired next year and the cost to the City. Alderman Miller has been working closely with IDOT and State Officials in order to get the repairs done. The total cost of the project is approximately $6 million dollars, the city’s portion of the cost from MFT funds will be approximately $237.475.00. The Council approved the expenditure of $237,475 of MFT monies for the project.

R21-29 Alderman Miller moved, seconded by Alderman Mason to approve the expense of MFT monies in the amount of approximately $237, 475.00 for repairs to Rt 10/Chestnut. The repairs are expected to begin in 2022.

Nays: None

Chairman declared motion carried.

Chief Anderson had many items to bring to the Council’s attention.

He is contacting the Union regarding the contract and the possibility of changing the shifts back to 12 hrs from 8 hrs.

_ Updating code book

_ Reviewed Police calls, arrests, etc

_ Ammo purchase

_ IT 360 and AT&T, getting cheaper rates

_ Putting squad truck into patrol rotation and using the Impala as an administrative vehicle

_ Building maintenance on Police department

R21-30 Alderman Snyder moved, seconded by Alderman Mason to approve the purchase of ammunition from Ray O’ Herron.

Ayes: Alderpersons Mize, Snyder, Miller, Mahin, and Mason

Nays: None

Chairman declared motion carried.

There being no further business, the meeting adjourned at 7:59 P.M.
