City of Mason City Council Met May 10.
Here is the minutes provided by the council:
Call to order by Mayor Bruce Lowe at approximately 7:00 P.M.
Council members physically present were Scott Francis, Gerald Mahin, Kevin Snyder, Danny Mason, Julie Mize, and Jim Miller. Treasurer Mike Griffin, Clerk Michele Whitehead, Superintendent Wayne Dixon and Chief Adam Anderson were also present.
The minutes of the April 26th, 2021 Council meeting and the accounts payable and Treasurer’s report were approved.
R21-49 Alderman Mason moved, seconded by Alderman Francis to approve the regular session minutes of the March 22nd, 2021 meeting, the accounts payable and treasurer’s report.
Ayes: Alderpersons Mize, Snyder, Miller, Francis, Mahin, and Mason
Nays: None
Chairman declared motion carried.
The recently re-elected Officials were sworn in, those positions were:
Mayor, Bruce Lowe
City Clerk, Michele Whitehead
Treasurer, Mike Griffin
Ward 1 Alderperson, Julie Mize
Ward 2 Alderman, Kevin Snyder
Ward 3 Alderman, Jim Miller.
Prairie State Plumbing and Heating submitted pay request #1 in the amount of $10,096.20 for the STP chlorination improvements.
R21-50 Alderman Mason moved, seconded by Alderman Snyder to approve pay request #1 from Prairie State Plumbing and Heating for STP chlorination improvements.
Ayes: Alderpersons Mize, Snyder, Miller, Francis, Mahin, and Mason
Nays: None
Chairman declared motion carried.
Pay request #14 was received from Schwartz Construction in the amount of $20,951.30 and CMT engineering fees in the amount of $439.59 to be paid from the CSO construction account.
R21-51 Alderman Mason moved, seconded by Alderman Mize to approve pay request #14 from Schwartz Construction in the amount of $20,951.30 and CMT in the amount of $439.59.

Alderman Miller inquired if side by side’s could be allowed into the golf cart ordinance as well. The Council agreed that they wanted to wait a few years before considering adding any additional options to the golf cart ordinance. The Council would like to see how well the golf cart ordinance, enforcement, and community cooperation go before adding anything additional.
Alderman Miller inquired once again about the cracked and broken sidewalk on the East end of town. He will make contact with the owner and see what progress can be made.
Superintendent Dixon spoke briefly about the town wide clean-up. He is still in the process of working out the dates and details with the disposal company. He will update as the information becomes available.
The ordinance regarding pools and fences around them or the filters was reviewed again. Upon recommendation from the ordinance committee, it was suggested to eliminate the pool ordinance completely. Homeowners will have to address the issue with their own insurance companies as far as what is required for safety around their pool. It was mentioned that doing away with this ordinance may upset some who had to take measures over the past few years to comply with it. Laws change every day on many levels, and communities must adapt to that. The ordinance will be removed from the city’s code book after proper procedure.
Chief Anderson discussed the severity of the condition of the police station, especially with the building next to it being torn down. The Council is still considering various options in regard to a new location for the police department.
Alderperson Mize inquired as to if the City is still interested in participating in the feral cat program. This will be discussed at the next council meeting.
