Community High School District 99 Board met Sept. 13.

Here are the minutes provided by the board:

The Board of Education, Community High School District 99, met in Workshop Session at 6:33 p.m. at North High School.

Upon the Secretary's roll call, the following Board members answered present: Nancy Kupka, President; Mike Davenport, Vice President; and Members Christopher Espinoza, Sherell Fuller, Jennie Hagstrom, Terry Pavesich and Joanna Vazquez Drexler. Member Vazquez Drexler participated via audio means.

Also present were Hank Thiele, Superintendent; Rob Lang, Assistant Superintendent for Staff Services; Courtney DeMent, North High Principal; Ed Schwartz, South High Principal; and Juli Gniadek, Secretary.

There were no visitors.

1. STUDENT PERSPECTIVES-SOUTH HIGH SCHOOL

South High students Samantha Bachara, Catherine Hewawissa and Gwen Royle shared their experiences finishing first in Sectionals and qualifying for the State Finals in Group Interpretation. They spoke about how they competed as a group, while performing separately via Zoom, and the bond they formed with their fellow actors. The students shared they finished 5th in State and 1st in Zoom submissions at State. The Board congratulated the students on their accomplishment.

2. STUDENT BOARD MEMBER QUESTIONS AND COMMENTS

Scarlett O'Hara, South High Student Board Member, provided information about upcoming events at South High including the four drama productions during first semester, the blood drive and Young Hearts 4 Life heart screening. Ms. O'Hara also shared how much the students loved showing off South High during the Open House.

Jade Toledano, North High Student Board Member, commented on the upcoming play, the success of the Athenas, the Marching Band's performance at U of I, Young Hearts 4 Life, the new coffee shop and the energy in the building.

3. RECEPTION OF VISITORS – PUBLIC COMMENT

There were no public comments.

4. UPCOMING BOARD MEETINGS

Dr. Thiele displayed upcoming meetings of the Board of Education including a Policy Committee meeting on Wednesday at the ASC and the September 20 Board Meeting. He stated the September 20 Board Meeting would begin at the ASC for the Budget Hearing, and then the Board would travel to South High for the traditional portion of the Board Meeting. He noted anyone wishing to address the Board about the budget should go to the ASC at 6:30 p.m.

5. CLOSED SESSION

Member Davenport moved and Member Pavesich seconded the motion that the meeting be adjourned to Closed Session for the purpose of the appointment, employment, compensation, discipline, performance, or dismissal of specific employees, specific individuals who serve as independent contractors in a park, recreational, or educational setting, or specific volunteers of the District or legal counsel for the District, including hearing testimony on a complaint lodged against an employee, a specific individual who serves as an independent contractor in a park, recreational, or educational setting, or a volunteer of the District or against legal counsel for the District to determine its validity. 5 ILCS 120/2(c)(1).

Upon the Secretary's roll call, Members Davenport, Pavesich, Vazquez Drexler, Espinoza, Fuller, Hagstrom and Kupka voted AYE. The President declared the motion carried.

President Kupka stated, after the Closed Session, the Board would return only to adjourn.

The meeting adjourned to Closed Session at 6:53 p.m.

6. RECONVENE TO REGULAR SESSION

The meeting was reconvened in Open Session with the following me in attendance: Nancy Kupka, President; Mike Davenport, Vice President; and Members Christopher Espinoza, Sherell Fuller, Jennie Hagstrom and Terry Pavesich. Member Joanna Vazquez Drexler was absent.

Also present were Rob Lang, Assistant Superintendent for Staff Services, and Juli Gniadek, Secretary.

7. ADJOURNMENT

There being no further business or discussion, Member Davenport moved and Member Pavesich seconded the motion that the meeting be adjourned. Upon the unanimous voice vote of the six members in attendance, the President declared the motion carried. The meeting adjourned at 7:53 p.m.
