Community High School District 99 Board of Education met March 7.

Here are the minutes provided by the board:

The Board of Education, Community High School District 99, met in Workshop Session at 6:30 p.m., at the Administrative Service Center.

Upon the Secretary's roll call, the following Board members answered present: Nancy Kupka,

President; Mike Davenport, Vice President; and Members Christopher Espinoza, Sherell Fuller, Jennie Hagstrom and Terry Pavesich. Member Joanna Vazquez Drexler arrived at 6:31 p.m.

Also present were Hank Thiele, Superintendent; Gina Ziccardi, Associate Superintendent; Rob Lang, Assistant Superintendent for Staff Services; Scott Wuggazer, Assistant Superintendent for Student Services; Jill Browning, Director of Communications; Courtney DeMent, North High Principal; Ed Schwartz, South High Principal; Student Board Members Scarlet O'Hara and Jade Toledano; and Juli Gniadek, Secretary.

There were no visitors.

1. STUDENT PERSPECTIVES - SOUTH HIGH SCHOOL

Edmund Lucas, Edwin Rubio and Alex Aguilar, members of the South High Smash Bros. Club, and Club sponsor Steve Zownorega, shared how they enjoyed participating in an esports tournament at Naperville North with 80 other high schools. The young men spoke about how much fun they have playing games in person.

The Board thanked the students for coming and sharing information about their Club.

2. STUDENT BOARD MEMBER QUESTIONS AND COMMENTS

Scarlett O'Hara, South High Student Board Member, updated the Board on activities going on at South High and highlighted the accomplishments of DECA students at the State competition.

North High Student Board Member Jade Toledano spoke about the French, German and Spanish language competitions; the spring musical, "Mary Poppins;" and the "Pretty in Purple Fashion Show."

3. RETURN TO IN-PERSON LEARNING

Dr. Thiele reported there were two positive student COVID cases last week and the District is no longer tracking close contacts.

4. HYBRID BOCK SCHEDULE UPDATE

Hank Thiele shared the Access period will occur on Wednesday and Thursday mornings in the hybrid block schedule, with all teachers available to students during the Access period. Gina Ziccardi stated over 50 people contributed to the discussions about the Access period. Executive functioning skills, post-secondary planning, counseling p~esentations, AVID strategies, media literacy, digital citizenship, technology tools and test preparation are some of the planned Access period topics, according to Ms.

Ziccardi. She noted, student programming that previously took up class time will take place during the Access period.

Board members asked clarifying questions on the hybrid block schedule and aspects of the Access and Resource periods.

Dr. Thiele stated the Board approved the Administration developing the hybrid block schedule in November, and the Board will be asked to take formal Action on the schedule at the March 21, 2022 Board meeting.

5. 2022-2023 STAFFING RECOMMENDATIONS

Gina Ziccardi advised the Board the Student Success Coordinators have been very successful serving as academic liaisons between counseling and teachers and reminded the Board that ARP ESSER III funds covered the cost of the Coordinators. Ms. Ziccardi stated the Administration recommends continuing the positions and paying for them out of local funds. Mr. Wuggazer shared, due to increased enrollment, the Administration recommends having a full time social worker at T99.

Dr. Thiele stated the cost of these positions was projected in the budget.

6. RECEPTlO OF VISITORS - PUBLIC COMMENT

There were no public comments.

7. ADJOURNMENT

There being no further business or discussion, Member Pavesich moved and Member Fuller seconded the motion that the meeting be adjourned. Upon the unanimous voice vote of the seven members in attendance, the President declared the motion carried. The meeting adjourned at 8:00 p.m.
