Illinois State Rep. Paul Jacobs (R-Pomona) applauded the Mound City National Cemetery and the people who took part in a historical reenactment following his trip to the Mount City National Preservation Commission's headquarters.
Jacobs detailed his visit during the weekend of April 23 via social media.
"Great day for an historical history lesson presented by the Mount City Preservation Committee with Grand Chain's Marlene Rivero portraying Ann Bradford Stokes, an African American nurse on board the USS Hospital Ship the Red Rover," he said in a Facebook post this week "If you get a chance go to the Mount City National Preservation Commission's headquarters at 315 S Fourth St in Mound City. They are turning the headquarters into a museum. Donations always accepted!"
More than 60 people showed up to watch the reenactment of Ann's experience on board the Red Rover during the Civil War, the Commission said in its Facebook post recently. The Illinois Humanities Road Scholars program helped make the April 23 event happen.
The Mound City National Cemetery Preservation Commission is a nonprofit organization that was established 28 years ago. It encourages people to participate to help maintain buildings at the Mound City National Cemetery and help expand the property for future veterans.
