Rep. Paul Jacobs is fighting to get Illinois its share of infrastructure funds.

In a Jun. 11 news release, Jacobs announced a community development block grant for Mt. Vernon.

"These Community Development Block Grants (CDBG) will improve sewer and water delivery systems, improve housing situations for individuals struggling with the high cost of living, and sends the message that I'm fighting for Southern Illinois' fair share of infrastructure funds," said Rep. Jacobs.

"DCEO's award of $23.5 million of Community Development Block Grant funds to downstate and rural communities will help deliver critical water, sewer, housing rehabilitation and other infrastructure projects, which are often too expensive for smaller localities to shoulder on their own," said DCEO Director Sylvia I. Garcia. "Governor Pritzker and our representatives in Congress have prioritized infrastructure investments for Illinoisans who need it most and CDBG is a great example of how the state is leveraging federal funds to support communities across Illinois."

According to the Illinois DCEO, the city of Mt. Vernon will receive $550,000, the largest amount any municipality was eligible for under the program. The villages of Alto Pass, Cobden, and Grand Tower have all received CDBG grant funds in recent years.

"I’m working to secure funds for Southern Illinois infrastructure and home improvements,” Jacobs said. “This funding will help ensure our region is competitive while putting people to work in good paying jobs in Southern Illinois during difficult economic times.”
