City of Mt. Vernon City Council met May 23.

The Mt. Vernon City Council met for a Public Hearing to hear comments regarding the Mt. Vernon Police Department Facility Project at City Hall in Mt. Vernon, Illinois. Assistant City Manager Nathan McKenna called the Public Hearing to order at 4:00 p.m.

Present: City Manager Mary Ellen Bechtel, Assistant City Manager Nathan McKenna, Deputy City Clerk Becky Barbour, Executive Assistant to Mayor and City Manager Kendra Donoho, and Mt. Vernon Resident, George May.

PUBLIC HEARING

Assistant City Manager Nathan McKenna provided the following information regarding the Mt. Vernon Police Department Facility Project.

He stated this is to certify that the City of Mt. Vernon is conducting a Public Hearing to give citizens an opportunity to become acquainted with the proposed new Police Department Facility and to comment on such items as economic and environmental impact, service area, alternatives to the project and other matters of concern.

Notice of the meeting was published in the Mt. Vernon Sentinel and a notice was posted in this organization’s principal office and a copy of the notice was furnished to U.S. Rural Development. The purpose of the public meeting is due to a $1 million USDA Rural Development Grant that the City is receiving to dedicate toward the Emergency Operation Center portion of the facility.

The facility is a 26,000 square foot facility with a construction budget of $8,092,753.00, and a total budget of $11,316,000.00. The proposed construction timeline is to have it completed by May, 2023.

The meeting was then opened up for comments by the public.

Mt. Vernon Citizen George May asked if there would be an evidence room for storage of property and if there would be classrooms for training of the officers. Assistant City Manager McKenna answered questions posed by Mr. May.

Assistant City Manager McKenna then presented the plans of the future Police Department Facility for review. City Manager Bechtel and Assistant City Manager McKenna continued by answering questions and going over the plans of the facility.

At the conclusion of the presentation regarding the plans, Mr. May expressed that he approves of the site and the construction of the new Police Facility in the park. He stated that he lives by the park and has had concerns of crime in the area, and he believes that the police presence in the area will help. He stated that a modern police facility is much needed.

ADJOURNMENT

Assistant City Manager McKenna adjourned the Public Hearing at 4:30 p.m.
