Community High School District 99 Board of Education met May 2.

Here are the minutes provided by the board:

The Board of Education, Community High School District 99, met in Workshop Session with Action Item at 6:30 p.m., at the Administrative Service Center.

Upon the Secretary's roll call, the following Board members answered present: Nancy Kupka, President; Mike Davenport, Vice President; and Members Christopher Espinoza, Sherell Fuller, Jennie Hagstrom, Terry Pavesich and Joanna Vazquez Drexler.

Also present were Hank Thiele, Superintendent; Rob Lang, Assistant Superintendent for Staff Services; Scott Wuggazer, Assistant Superintendent for Student Services; Courtney DeMent, North High Principal; Ed Schwartz, South High Principal; Student Board Members Scarlett O'Hara and Jade Toledano; and Juli Gniadek, Secretary.

There were no visitors.

1. STUDENT PERSPECTIVES

Renatta Jacob, Liana O'Rourke, and Bianca Obedoza, members of South High's Orchesis Dance Club, shared the club is non-cut, open to all ethnicities and genders, prides itself on being judgment free and studies many different dance styles. The students described how they kept in touch during the pandemic and some of their performances this year, including the Orchesis Showcase, the Addison Trail Diversity Show and at the Spirit Assembly.

Members of the Board thanked the students for coming to share their enthusiasm about dance.

2. STUDENT BOARD MEMBER QUESTIONS AND COMMENTS

Jade Toledano, North High Student Board Member, updated the Board on happenings at North High in April and May, including the Spring Art Show; the spring play, “The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time:" Drug Awareness Week; Academic Awards; AP Testing; Mental Health Awareness Month; and Staff Appreciation Week.

Scarlett O'Hara, South High Student Board Member, shared the girls softball team has won 89 consecutive conference games, seniors won the Spirit Jug during Spirit Week and five journalists medaled at the Sate competition. She expressed appreciation to all staff in recognition of Staff Appreciation Week.

The Student Board Members shared today is Decision Day; the Board asked the students where they planned on attending college – Ms. O'Hara responded Ohio State and Ms. Toledano responded IE University in Spain.

President Kupka also recognized teachers and administrators for all they do for students. Dr. Thiele stated there is an opportunity on the website where anyone can leave a personal note for a staff member.

3. RECEPTION OF VISITORS - PUBLIC COMMENT

There were no public comments.

4. STRATEGIC PLAN

Dr. Thiele stated at the next Board meeting the Board will be asked to take Action on the Strategic Plan. He provided an overview of the Plan, including the recommended Mission, Vision and Value statements and the four Strategic Directions. In May and June the Administration will develop the tasks for next year, based on the Strategic Plan, according to Hank Thiele, and in August the Board will be asked to approve those tasks.

5. HYBRID BLOCK SCHEDULE

Hank Thiele shared last week drop in Q & A sessions were held on the Hybrid Block Schedule at both buildings, with Gina Ziccardi and Courtney DeMent at North and he and Ed Schwartz at South. He reviewed some of the slides used during the staff sessions and some of the questions raised by staff and how those questions are being addressed. Dr. Thiele noted there will be additional bus routes in the morning so students will spend a shorter amount of time on the bus.

6. PERSONNEL REPORT - APPOINTMENT-ADMINISTRATION; APPOINTMENT-CERTIFIED

Dr. Thiele stated at the May Workshop Meeting the Board is often asked to approve personnel and tonight the Board is being asked to approve Keith Palz, who is in attendance, to be the new Associate Principal at North High overseeing curriculum and instruction.

Member Davenport moved and Member Pavesich seconded the motion that the Board of Education approve the Personnel Report - Appointment-Administration; Appointment-Certified.

Upon the Secretary's roll call, Members Davenport, Pavesich, Vazquez Drexler, Espinoza, Fuller, Hagstrom and Kupka voted AYE. The President declared the motion carried.

Dr. Thiele stated Members Davenport and Fuller reviewed the policies and he asked that any questions be forwarded to Members Davenport, Fuller and himself.

9. ADJOURNMENT

There being no further business or discussion, Member Fuller moved and Member Pavesich seconded the motion that the meeting be adjourned.
