The Mount Vernon Nazarene University men's soccer team (6-3-4, 1-1-3 CL) defeated Marian University (4-7-2, 1-3-1 CL) by a score of 2-1 on Wednesday night, October 12 at CH4 Stadium.
The Cougars and the Knights played an intense and action-packed match on Wednesday night in Mount Vernon. After a scoreless, yet entertaining first half, both teams were in search of a winner. The hosts found the opening goal in the 71' minute from a Ryan Walters free kick. Walters whipped a ball into the box from outside the area and Aaron Jolly beat his man to poke it by the Marian goalkeeper to make it 1-0 in favor of MVNU.
Then, just seven minutes later, Marian equalized from a corner kick as Justin Kapp headed past Joshua Dunn to knot things up at one-apiece. However, the Cougars were able to relish a winner as Tiago DeJesus scored in the 88' minute to give MVNU a 2-1 advantage. The assist on DeJesus' goal came from Sam Hershey.
The Cougars outshot the Knights 19-4, with seven of MVNU's 19 shots being on goal. Dunn made two huge saves for the Cougars in goal.
With the win, Head Coach Zach Ganzberg hit the 50 win mark in his career at MVNU.
