Cairo School District Number 1 Board of Education met June 23.

President, Sheila Nelson, called the meeting to order at 6:02 p.m.

Public Comments:
Ms. Dorice O'Shea told the board that the union has a meeting on Tuesday, June 28th after summer school lets out. She hope that the board and Dr. Rice would take into account the loyalty of the teachers who have taught through covid.
Brittany Mathews thanked the board, Dr. Rice, Principals Mr. Ronna and Mrs. Nelson for allowing the Juneteeth Paint Night at Cairo Elementary School.
Maria Watkins asked the board about police in the school. The board stated on going to seek community input regarding a resource officer. She also asked about bonding and what can be done to expand things needed at the elementary school, such as a gym.
Superintendent Report
Dr. Rice introduced Dr. Ronald Ferrell Asst. Superintendent, Ms. Narita Graham, as CJSHS Principal and Taylor Clark, CJSHS Dean of Students. Dr. Rice also thanked Mr. Ronna for helping out with getting the new employees acclimated to the district. The board training is scheduled to be held in July. The Consortium of State School Board Association conference is scheduled from September 8-9 and CUBE Conference is September 29 through October 1st. Summer school is going well. The construction is on schedule for windows and lighting for Regular Board Meeting June 24, 2021buildings and HVAC units are delayed so we must continue to utilize temporary AC. The energy company is offering rebates toward this. The Community fundraiser policy is on first read. SCC is asking the district to partner to offer dual credit classes for CAN for our students. Board Policies updates are on first read Handbook committee meeting is July 6th at 1 pm. The family of McPherson reached out to Board President Nelson, about renaming Cairo Jr. Sr. High School to Elmer McPherson Jr. Sr. High School.
