COUGARS OPEN TEXAS TRIP WITH VICTORY OVER NORTH AMERICAN UNIVERSITY

The Mount Vernon Nazarene University men's basketball team (5-6, 0-4 CL) began its trip to San Antonio, Texas with a win over North American University (0-7) by a final score of 91-70 on Monday, December 12.

MVNU wore North American down in the first half. The Cougars used hot shooting and a strong defensive effort to build a 49-27 lead going into the half. MVNU shot a blistering 60% from the field and 50% from three (6-12) in the first half. The Cougar defense held NAU to just 37% shooting. MVNU also forced 14 first half turnovers.

The Cougars didn't miss a beat in the second half as they continued to execute on both ends of the floor. For the game, MVNU shot 59.3% from the field and 44.4% from deep (8-18). Defensively, MVNU forced 24 turnovers and scored 31 points off them.

 

Inside the Box Score

Kyle Kegley had a monster night for the Cougars as he tied a career-high with 30 points. Kegley shot 12-15 from the floor and 2-2 from deep. The senior grabbed 11 rebounds and blocked three shots.

Kade Ruegsegger had 23 points for MVNU on 8-11 shooting from the field. Ruegsegger had six rebounds and two steals on the day.

Carter Pline had 13 points of the bench. Pline shot 4-5 from the floor and 4-4 from the free throw line. Pline dished out three assists and came away with two steals.

Milton Gage finished with five points and 11 assists for the Cougars. Gage had five rebounds and four steals.

 

Coach Ronai's Thoughts

"It has been a great few days of growth on and off the floor. It was good to get out there and compete against someone else. NAU was extremely athletic and gave us a good look in specific areas of the game. We're excited to get better tomorrow and finish this trip well."
