LADY COUGARS OVERPOWERED BY GRITTY UPIKE TEAM

The Mount Vernon Nazarene University women's basketball team (6-8) took the court after some time off for the holiday season on Thursday, December 29 in Ariel Arena.

The Lady Cougars hosted the University of Pikeville (10-4) and ultimately would go on to fall in the end by a final score of 54-64. Defense and dominance on the boards from Pikeville made it hard for MVNU to gain any sort of control in the game. MVNU never led in the contest.

MVNU fought hard, however. An Emily Walker three with 5:37 left in the game brought MVNU within three at 54-51. The Bears responded to the big shot with a 10-3 run to close out the game. The Bears outworked MVNU on the glass by a 51-29 margin. Upike had 13 second chance points off its 16 offensive rebounds.

Despite shooting slightly higher from the field (39.6% to 39.1%), the rebounding woes and poor free throw shooting (7-16, 43.8%) ended up being too much for the Lady Cougars to overcome in the end.

Inside the Box Score

Maggie Coe led MVNU with 16 points, four rebounds, and two assists.

Sage Brannon scored 14 points off the bench on 6-9 shooting from the floor.

Emily Walker had six points on 2-3 shooting from three. Walker had two assists.
