COUGARS FIGHT HARD BUT FALL TO SAINT FRANCIS
The Mount Vernon Nazarene University men's basketball team (10-11, 3-8 CL) fell to the University of Saint Francis (11-10, 5-7 CL) by a score of 72-71 on Wednesday evening, January 25 at Ariel Arena.
The Cougars were missing three important players on the night due to injury—Milton Gage, Kyle Kegley, and Carter Pline—but the team fought hard against a veteran team and gave the visitors all they had. Because of the absences, Kade Ruegsegger and Trent Koning played all 40 minutes and were key in keeping MVNU in the game.
Despite falling behind by nine at the end of the first half, the Cougars went into halftime down 29-21 and pulled themselves back into the game with a 9-0 run to take the lead to start the second half. Both teams were going back and forth all night, exchanging blow after blow as each team held the lead six different times. Both teams shot the ball well from three-point range, but Saint Francis' 39.3% (11-28) edged out MVNU's 33.3% (9-27).
The hosts trailed by one point with just seconds to go and had a chance to win it as they rebounded a missed Saint Francis free throw, but Eric McLaughlin's last second heave from beyond-half court did not fall. Despite the loss, MVNU fought hard and can be proud of how they played.
