Community High School District 99 Board of Education met May 15.

The Board of Education, Community High School District 99, met in regular session at 6:30 p.m. on Monday, May 15, 2023 at the Administrative Service Center.
Upon the Secretary's roll call, the following Board members answered present: Nancy Kupka, President; Mike Davenport, Vice President; and Members Christopher Espinoza, Sherell Fuller, Jennie Hagstrom, Terry Pavesich and Joanna Vazquez Drexler.
Also present were Hank Thiele, Superintendent; Gina Ziccardi, Associate Superintendent for Student Learning; Rob Lang, Assistant Superintendent for Staff Services; Scott Wuggazer, Assistant Superintendent for Student Services; Mark Staehlin, District Controller; Jeree Ethridge, Chief School Business Official; Jill Browning, Director of Communications; Courtney DeMent, North High Principal; Student Board Members Luka Paulauskas and Kaitlyn Vincent; and Juli Gniadek, Secretary.
There were six visitors. A copy of the Visitor Roster is attached.
1. RECEPTION OF VISITORS - PUBLIC COMMENT
There were no public comments.
2. STUDENT DISCIPLINE-STUDENT 2023.1
Member Hagstrom moved and Member Pavesich seconded the motion for the Board of Education to accept the report of the Board appointed Hearing Officer in the matter of Student 2023.1 and expel Student 2023.1 for the 2023-2024 School Year. If Student 2023.1 is meeting or exceeding their goals, they may be eligible to return in January, 2024.
Upon the Secretary's roll call, Members Hagstrom, Pavesich, Vazquez Drexler, Davenport, Espinoza, Fuller and Kupka voted AYE. The President declared the motion carried.
3. APPROVAL OF MINUTES
Member Vazquez Drexler moved and Member Davenport seconded the motion that the Board of Education approve the Minutes of the April 17, 2023 Business Meeting, the April 17, 2023 Closed Meeting, the April 19, 2023 Parent-Teacher Advisory Committee Meeting; the May 1, 2023 Workshop Meeting and the May 1, 2023 Closed Meeting.
Upon the Secretary's roll call, Members Vazquez Drexler, Davenport, Espinoza, Fuller Hagstrom, Pavesich and Kupka voted AYE. The President declared the motion carried.
4. RECOGNITION
Dr. Thiele noted May 8-12 was Teacher Appreciation Week and thanked teachers for all they do. He shared May 10 was National School Nurse Day, and acknowledged the contributions of the District 99 nurses, especially during the pandemic; and May 12 was School Communications
Staff Day and recognized the work of Jill Browning and Lauren Miholic. The Board and those in attendance expressed their appreciation to the staff members.
Dr. Thiele stated Rod Russeau, Director of Technology and Information Resources, received the inaugural Lifetime Achievement Award from the Illinois Educational Technology Leaders (IETL). Hank Thiele reported District 99 received the Downers Grove Economic Development Corporation (DGEDC) Cornerstone Award and a Merit Award from the Chicago Building Congress. He noted both of the awards were for the Master Facility Plan and that Member Davenport and he were at both award presentations.
Dr. Thiele thanked Student Board Members Luka Paulauskas and Kaitlyn Vincent for their contributions to the Board and commended them for their representation of the student body at their respective schools. He presented each student with a token of the Board's appreciation. Both students shared their post-secondary plans; Ms. Paulauskas shared she will be attending Indiana University majoring in Accounting and Ms. Vincent shared she will be majoring in Political Science/Pre-law at the University of Missouri. The Board and those in attendance thanked the students for their contributions.
Dr. Thiele presented outgoing Board members President Nancy Kupka, Vice President Mike Davenport and Member Joanna Vazquez Drexler with an expression of appreciation from the District. He thanked them for their dedicated service to District 99. The retiring Board members each shared their thoughts on serving on the Board and expressed their thanks for the opportunity. Those in attendance applauded the retiring Board members for their service.
Dr. DeMent introduced the two new Student Board Members - Gianna Hunsche, North High, and Nahla Mokkath, South High. Both students shared some of the things they are participating in at school. The Board welcomed the students to the Board.

7. RECEPTION OF VISITORS - PUBLIC COMMENT
Laura Hois thanked the outgoing Board members for their service, welcomed the new Board members, shared her expectations for the new Board and expressed her wish that different Board members had won the election. Julia Beckman, congratulated the retiring Board members thanked them for their service, and urged them to serve as mentors to the new Board members who will be seated.

8. ADJOURNMENT SINE DIE
There being no further business or discussion, Member Davenport moved and Member Vazquez Drexler seconded the motion that the meeting be adjourned. Upon the unanimous voice vote of the seven members in attendance, the President declared the motion carried. The meeting adjourned sine die at 6:51 p.m.
