Community High School District 99 Board of Education met March 4.

Here are the minutes provided by the board:

The Board of Education, Community High School District 99, met in Workshop Session with Action Item at 6:30 p.m. on Monday, March 4, 2024 at the Administrative Service Center.

Upon the Secretary's roll call, the following Board members answered present: Don Renner, President; Terry Pavesich, Vice President; and Members Kara Casten, Ken Dawson, Sherell Fuller and Jennie Hagstrom. Member Christopher Espinoza was absent.

Also present were Hank Thiele, Superintendent; Gina Ziccardi, Associate Superintendent for Student Learning; Rob Lang, Assistant Superintendent for Staff Services; Scott Wuggazer, Assistant Superintendent for Student Services; Travis McGuire, Assistant Superintendent for Learning Resources; Jeree Ehtridge, CSBO; Jill Browning, Chief Communications Officer; Arwen Lyp, South High Principal; Student Board Member Nahla Mokkath; and Juli Gniadek, Secretary.

There were two visitors. A copy of the Visitor Roster is attached.

1. STUDENT RECOGNITIONS

Ms. Lyp introduced the State Runner Up Trostangs Gymnastics Team Head Coach Kristyn Campos, who shared highlights of the Team's season and introduced the members of the Team. Genevieve Heron, State Champion on the Balance Beam, thanked everyone for their support.

Dr. Thiele read excerpts from a Proclamation from the Village of Downers Grove declaring March 4, 2024, Girls Gymnastics Day and excerpts from a Proclamation from the Village of Woodridge declaring March 4, 2024, Downers Grove Gymnastics Team Day. He also read from an additional Village of Woodridge Proclamation declaring March 1, 2024, as Genevieve Heron Day.

Ms. Lyp introduced Justin Matkovich, Head Coach of the second in State South High Speech Team. Mr. Matkovich thanked the Board for its support and introduced the members of the Team. Gianna Caponigro, State Champion in Humorous Interpretation, thanked Mr. Matkovich and the Board and shared speech has helped in other aspects of her life.

Dr. Thiele read excerpts from Proclamations from the Village of Downers Grove and the Village of Woodridge declaring March 4, 2024, Downers Grove South Speech Team Day. He also read from an additional Village of Woodridge Proclamation declaring March 1, 2024, as Gianna Caponigro Day.

Ms. Lyp introduced Sean Lovelace, Head Coach of the South High Wrestling Team, who then introduced Matty Lapacek, who finished 4th in the State in the 190 lb. weight class. Mr. Lovelace commented that activities and athletics make the school experience better. Matty thanked his coaches, parents, trainers and teammates for their support.

Dr. Thiele read excerpts from a Proclamation from the Village of Downers Grove declaring March 4, 2024, Matty Lapacek Day and excerpts from a Proclamation from the Village of Woodridge declaring March 1, 2024, Matty Lapacek Day.

Erin Ludwick, North High Associate Principal, introduced Marcos Rico, North High Head Wrestling Coach, and Kayleigh Loo, 4th place finisher in State. Mr. Rico stated Ms. Loo took 1st at the IHSA Regional and Sectional and was the first IHSA State Girls Wrestling placer for District 99. Ms. Loo thanked everyone for their supprt.

Dr. Thiele read excerpts from Proclamations from the Village of Downers Grove and the Village of Woodridge declaring March 4, 2024, Kayleigh Loo Day.

The Board and those in attendance applauded the coaches and students who were recognized.

2. STUDENT PERSPECTIVES-SOUTH HIGH SCHOOL

South High student Will Feylo shared his experience as one of ten students in the State chosen to select, from a list of 75 books, the twenty that will be on the Illinois Teen Readers' Choice list.

Dr. Thiele thanked Mr. Feylo for his leadership and representing District 99 at the State level; the Board and those in attendance applauded his accomplishment.

3. STUDENT BOARD MEMBER QUESTIONS AND COMMENTS

Ms. Mokkath, South High Student Board member, recapped February events at South High, which included: the Dance Team placing 12th at State; CBS News being on campus; frogs hidden around the school for Leap Day; the Spirit Assembly, where seniors were victorious and won the Spirit Jug; and seniors vs. staff basketball. She shared upcoming events include a choir concert and DECA going to State.

4. RECEPTION OF VISITORS - PUBLIC COMMENT

There were no public comments.

5. 2024-2025 STAFFING PROCESS

Dr. Lang stated there are two types of FTE - sectioning FTE, which is tied to course requests from students during registration; and non-sectioning FTE, which is not tied to course selections. He advised the Board, at the next meeting, personnel reports and staffing recommendations would be presented.

6. CLOSED SESSION

President Renner read the Motion to go into Closed Session. No Board member moved that the Board go into Closed Session. No Closed Session was held.

7. RESOLUTION AUTHORIZING THE JULY 1, 2024 - JUNE 30, 2029 PERFORMANCE BASED SUPERINTENDENT'S CONTRACT BETWEEN THE BOARD OF EDUCATION AND DR. HENRY THIELE

Member Pavesich moved and Member Dawson seconded the motion for the Board of Education to adopt the Resolution Authorizing the July 1, 2024 - June 30, 2029 Performance Based Superintendent's Contract between the Board of Education and Dr. Henry Thiele.

Upon the Secretary's roll call, Members Pavesich, Dawson, Fuller, Hagstrom, Casten and Renner voted AYE. The President declared the motion carried.

President Renner commended Dr. Thiele's innovation and fiscal responsibility, and emphasized the value of continuity.

Dr. Thiele thanked the Board for their support and trust and stated it is an honor to serve.

8. RECEPTION OF VISITORS - PUBLIC COMMENT

There were no public comments.

9. ADJOURNMENT

There being no further business or discussion, Member Pavesich moved and Member Dawson seconded the motion that the meeting be adjourned. Upon the unanimous voice vote of the six members in attendance, the President declared the motion carried. The meeting adjourned at 7:23 p.m.
