Community High School District 99 Board of Education met April 1.

Here are the minutes provided by the board:

The Board of Education, Community High School District 99, met in Workshop Session at 6:30 p.m. on Monday, April 1, 2024 at the Administrative Service Center.

Upon the Secretary's roll call, the following Board members answered present: Don Renner, President; Terry Pavesich, Vice President; and Members Kara Casten, Ken Dawson, Christopher Espinoza, Sherell Fuller and Jennie Hagstrom.

Also present were Hank Thiele, Superintendent; Rob Lang, Assistant Superintendent for Staff Services; Travis McGuire, Assistant Superintendent for Learning Resources; Jeree Ethridge, Chief School Business Official; Jill Browning, Chief Communications Officer; Courtney DeMent, North High Principal; Arwen Lyp, South High Principal; Student Board Members Gianna Hunsche and Nahla Mokkath; and Juli Gniadek, Secretary.

There were no visitors.

1. STUDENT RECOGNITIONS-SOUTH HIGH

Ms. Lyp and Dr. DeMent introduced Arthur Drenth and Kiley Czerwinski, coaches of the D99 Hoops Team 2 State Silver Medalists. South High Senior Elizabeth Knowles shared that she enjoys playing basketball because she loves meeting people with the same drive and getting to know her team members better.

Mr. Drenth stated there are four basketball teams in the program, with 50 athletes from North High, South High and T99. He shared the season goes from November to January, followed by a Special Olympics regional tournament and a State tournament in March, if they qualify. Mr. Drenth expressed his gratitude for the support of the District and the great facilities available to the students. Arthur Drenth introduced the members of the Silver Medal D99 Hoops Team 2.

Dr. Thiele read excerpts from a Proclamation from the Village of Downers Grove declaring Thursday, April 4, 2024 D99 Hoops Team 2 Day in Downers Grove in recognition of their 2nd Place Silver Medal at the Special Olympics Illinois Basketball Tournament.

Ms. Lyp introduced Doug Plunkett, Girls Cross Country Coach. Mr. Plunkett congratulated Holly Johnson, who earned All State Honors in Cross Country this year, for the second time, and placed 25th in the IHSA State Championship. Ms. Johnson thanked her coaches and shared she could not have done it without them.

Arwen Lyp introduced Mustang Head Football Coach Mark Molinari. Mr. Molinari thanked the Board for honoring Joshua Manecke, IHSFCA All-State, and all of the athletes. Mark Molinari commended Mr. Manecke for his work ethic and for being one of 22 All State football players in 8A. He also noted Joshua Manecke would be attending West Point in the fall. Mr. Manecke thanked the Board for recognizing him, his parents and coaches for their support, and his teammates. He stated he is looking forward to continuing his football career at West Point and serving his country.

Ms. Lyp introduced Paul Krick, South High DECA Coach. Mr. Krick recognized the other two coaches, Ruth White, who was in attendance, and Pat Fardy. He introduced Nahla Mokkath, who took 4th Place in the State in Professional Selling. Ms. Mokkath shared going to State is a great experience and helps get you out of your comfort zone. She also thanked Coach Krick for the opportunity. Mr. Krick then introduced Brianna Monroy, Mara Haiduc and Seema Raiper, who received 3rd Place in State for Business Services Operations. The students thanked Mr. Krick and Ms. White and shared the project felt real, the experience was rewarding and going to State was an incredible opportunity.

Lastly, Mr. Krick introduced Sophia Lodhi and Rylee Monroe, who are State Champions in Project Management Business Solutions, and will be competing in Nationals at the end of the month. Ms. Monroe explained they worked with The Forge, a zip line park in Lemont, and were very lucky to work with great people there. She thanked the DECA advisors and other DECA members who helped guide them through the project. Ms. Lodhi shared it was great to work with an amazing company and learn real life skills.

Dr. Thiele read excerpts from a Proclamation from the Village of Downers Grove recognizing Paul Krick for being Marketing Educator of the Year and declaring Tuesday, April 2, 2024 Sophia Lodhi Day and Wednesday, April 3, 2024 Rylee Monroe Day.

Ms. White recognized Mr. Krick on receiving recognition as the Marketing Educator of the Year.

Ms. Lyp congratulated staff members Nathaniel Haywood, named All State Theater Director, and Hunter Evans, named All State Theater Scenic Designer, and student Nick Gadomski who was part of the All State Theater Stage Crew. She stated competing in Theater Fest takes a lot of commitment and time.

The Board and those in attendance applauded each of the coaches and students who were recognized.

2. STUDENT BOARD MEMBER QUESTIONS AND COMMENTS

South High Student Board Member Nahla Mokkath shared the following events are happening in the next few weeks at South High: SAT and PSAT testing; watching the solar eclipse; Culture Week; Earth Week; Prom; and planting of the prairie garden. She also expressed how much she liked the student recognition portion of the meeting.

Gianna Hunsche, North High Student Board Member, thanked the school for giving students the special glasses to watch the eclipse and scheduling the time to do it. She shared testing is next week, Prom is coming up and the school is giving students lots of fun things to do the last couple months of the year.

3. STAFF RECEIVING TENURE

Dr. Thiele displayed a list of the teachers being granted tenure, congratulated them, and stated tenure is granted by the State of Illinois. The Board applauded the teachers receiving tenure.

4. BOND NOTIFICATION

Jeree Ethridge stated the Bonds were sold, the closing is on Wednesday and the documents in BoardDocs contain the specifics of the sale.

5. RECEPTION OF VISITORS - PUBLIC COMMENT

There were no public comments.

6. ADJOURNMENT

There being no further business or discussion, Member Pavesich moved and Member Dawson seconded the motion that the meeting be adjourned. Upon the unanimous voice vote of the seven members in attendance, the President declared the motion carried. The meeting adjourned at 7:01 p.m.
