Workshop Session Minutes
The Board of Education, Community High School District 99, met in Workshop Session at 6:32 p.m. on Monday, May 5, 2025 at the Administrative Service Center.
Upon the Secretary's roll call, the following Board members answered present: Don Renner, President; Terry Pavesich, Vice President; and Members Kara Casten, Ken Dawson, Christopher Espinoza, Sherell Fuller and Jennie Hagstrom.
Also present were Hank Thiele, Superintendent; Gina Ziccardi, Associate Superintendent; Rob Lang, Assistant Superintendent for Staff Services; Scott Wuggazer, Assistant Superintendent for Student Services; Jeree Ethridge, Chief School Business Official; Jill Browning, Chief Communications Officer; Phil Howard, Chief Technology Officer; Jeff Bergholtz, Director of Human Resources; Ryan Doherty, Director of Student Experiences; Courtney DeMent, North High Principal; Arwen Lyp, South High Principal; Student Board Members Rehan Hashim and Jason Trejo; and Juli Gniadek, Secretary.
There were three visitors. A copy of the Visitors Roster is attached.
1. ISBE STUDENT SUMMIT ATTENDEES
North High student Owen Willis and South High students Anvi Krishnardula and Yamil Pacheco shared their experiences at the Illinois State Board of Education (ISBE) Student Summit held at ISU. The students shared they learned what other schools are doing in the areas of curriculum, clubs, AI and how they address cell phone usage by students.
The Board thanked the students for sharing their experience.
2. STUDENT BOARD MEMBER QUESTIONS AND COMMENTS
South High Student Board Member Jason Trejo shared upcoming events include yearbook distribution and the Spring Art Show, and seniors are looking forward to Graduation and the senior barbecue. North High Student Board Member Rehan Hashim noted AP testing is this week and the digital format is helping; students sometimes miss important information because they don't check their email; and Access lessons would be more meaningful if they were longer.
3. APPROVAL OF MINUTES
Member Pavesich moved and Member Dawson seconded the motion that the Board of Education approve the Minutes of the April 21, 2025 Business Meeting, the April 21, 2025 Closed Meeting, the April 28, 2025 Parent-Teacher Advisory Committee Meeting, and the May 1, 2025 Special Meeting with Action Item.
Upon the Secretary's roll call, Members Pavesich, Dawson, Espinoza, Fuller, Hagstrom, Casten and Renner voted AYE. The President declared the motion carried.
4. PARENT-TEACHER ADVISORY COMMITTEE MEETING FEEDBACK
Scott Wuggazer stated the Parent-Teacher Advisory Committee Meeting was held last Monday at South High School in the Library with Board Members Kara Casten and Jennie Hagstrom attending as well as incoming Board Members Michael Riske, April Finan and Katie Courtney. He shared Nicole Walus and Pat Fleming presented information on the PATH Program, he provided data on chronic absenteeism, and Gina Ziccardi introduced the Consolidated District Plan. Mr. Wuggazer reported there were two brainstorming activities, and a follow-up Google Form was sent to attendees.
Members Casten and Hagstrom also provided feedback.
5. RECOGNITION - OUTGOING BOARD MEMBERS
Dr. Thiele recognized retiring Board Members Jennie Hagstrom, Sherell Fuller and Terry Pavesich. He thanked them for their years of distinguished service and for always putting students first.
Members Hagstrom, Fuller and Pavesich each read a statement offering their thanks to the community and the staff and students of District 99 and shared some of their personal memories of serving on the Board.
6. RECEPTION OF VISITORS - PUBLIC COMMENT
Julia Beckman, former Board Member and District 99 Education Foundation President, thanked the retiring Board Members for their service and welcomed the new Board Members.
7. ADJOURNMENT SINE DIE
There being no further business or discussion, Member Hagstrom moved and Member Fuller seconded the motion that the meeting be adjourned. Upon the unanimous voice vote of the seven members in attendance, the President declared the motion carried. The meeting adjourned sine die at 7:03 p.m.
