Cairo School District #1 Board of Education met July 17.

REGULAR MEETING

Board President, Brittany Matthews, called the Board of Education meeting to order at 6:00 P.M.

1. Call to Order

2. Examples of Excellence

a. Cairo Elementary School Principal, Serina Nelson, presented the following:

• The summer Enrichment program ended on Jun 27, 2025. We had daily sessions of ELA and Math for every grade level, from pre-K through sixth grade. Additionally, students attended sessions related to the Teen Reach programming twice a week. (STEM, Recreation & Arts, Social Learning, and Life Skills) Monday-Thursday was programming. Each Friday, we went on a field trip: week 1 - Memphis Botanic Garden, Week 2 - Tennessee Safari Park, and week 3 - Nashville Science Center. Fifty-three students attended the summer enrichment program. Teachers completed pre- and post- assessments in each class.

• The Shawnee Community College camps held at CES:

Basketball Camp (June 16) - 9 students

Drone Camp (July 14)- 12 students

Other Shawnee camps attended by Cairo School District Students:

Lego Robotics - 11 students

Fantastic Florals - 6 students

Sew Fun - 10 students

Cookie Decorating 10 students

Jewelry Making Camp - 10 students

• The maintenance and custodial staff are working to clean the building and grounds in preparation for the upcoming school year.

• Our request to the Shawnee College construction trade program to install the new playground equipment was not accepted. We are now seeking an alternative contractor to complete the work before the Pre-K state visit.

• The recurring order for student consumables for our curriculum has been updated and returned to McGraw-Hill for distribution.

• On July 15, the leadership team began work on the 2025-26 School Improvement Plan.

• Student files are updated with 2024-25 transcripts. Thus far, records have been sent for one student who transferred out of the district.

• Pre-K screenings took place today.
