Jefferson FPD responds to 135 fires in 2017

Jefferson Fire Protection District responded to 160 calls in 2017 - 40.4 percent more than the previous year, according to data from the National Fire Incident Reporting System.

The calls in Jefferson included 135 fires - 38 structure fires, 31 vehicle fires and 66 other fires. The fire department also responded to one call for ruptures, explosions or overheating.

In all, the department saw $2,373,650 in fire loss - or about $17,583 per fire.

The department also received 24 false calls, including five malicious calls and 19 other false calls.

The calls resulted in eight civilian fire-related injuries and one civilian non-fire death. Additionally, one fire service member was injured in fire-related incidents.

The Jefferson FPD Firefighters Pension Fund, which has four active employees and seven retired or inactive employees, was $103,930 in debt as of December 2016, according to the fund's mandated filings with the Illinois Department of Insurance. That amounts to $1,071 for every fire in 2016.
