Deaconess Illinois has introduced “Breast Check Fridays,” a new initiative to encourage women over 40 in Southern Illinois to get screened for breast cancer. The program, which begins on October 3, allows women to walk in for a 3D mammogram at three Deaconess Illinois locations—Crossroads in Mt. Vernon, Medical Center in Marion, and Union County in Anna—without needing an appointment or a doctor’s order.
The screenings will be available on the first four Fridays of October as part of Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Each Friday will feature themed activities aimed at making the experience more comfortable and supportive for patients. Activities include decorating cookies, making friendship bracelets, writing uplifting messages for a community mural, and decorating mini pumpkins.
Katie Warren, MHA, RT(R)(CT)(ARRT), Illinois Regional Director of Radiology, said: “We know early detection saves lives, but many women delay or avoid mammograms due to inconvenience or anxiety. Breast Check Fridays are about creating a welcoming environment where women feel supported, informed and empowered to take control of their health.”
Imaging Director Paula Dodillet, RT(R)(CT)(ARRT), added: “We’re meeting women where they are—physically and emotionally. Whether it’s cookies or conversation, these simple moments can turn a routine screening into something meaningful and memorable.”
The initiative targets women aged 40 and older who are due for routine mammograms by removing the need for prior appointments or referrals.
