City of Benton Zoning and Planning Commission met Oct. 2.

Here is the minutes provided by the commission:

The Benton Zoning and Planning Commission's public hearing was called to order by Chairman Shockley at 6:00 pm on Wednesday, October 2, 2019 at 1403 at the Benton Municipal Building at 1403 South Main Street.

Roll Call: Shockley, McGuire, Cockrum, Payne-Hubler, Clark, Collier Also Present: David Garavalia, Zoning Administrator; Members of the public

A motion to approve the September 4 Regular Minutes was made by McGuire and seconded by Cockrum.

Ayes: Shockley, McGuire, Cockrum, Collier Nays: Payne-Hubler Abstain: Clark

A motion to present spotlight award to Joes Pizza as the commercial property and Browning Residence as the residential property for the month of October was made by Collier and seconded by Cockrum

Ayes: Shockley, McGuire, Cockrum, Payne-Hubler, Clark, Collier

Under public comments / misc. business, Discussion was held as to whether the public library and Franklin Hospital could be considered for the spotlight award. Commissioner Cathy Ann Garavalia stated the she would like to see the award go to the hospital as a whole. Tom Carter stated he thought it would like to see the volunteers, not paid employees be recognized.

Commissioner Cathy Ann Garavalia informed the committee of an upcoming grant being awarded to the Benton Public Library to make way for a community garden.

Discussion regarding the number of homes, in Benton, were awarded grants through Crosswalk. Mr. Shockley and Garavalia stated that they would work with their contacts on finding out that information and report back to the committee.

Mr. Garavalia stated he would be delaying demolition action on an abandoned trailer on Wilson due to possible pending sale of the property. Mr. Garavalia also informed the committee that he had 5 other properties lined up for demolition as water and power had been disconnected on them all.

Mr. Garavalia informed the committee that progress had begun on the Campbell building toward converting the basement into temporary courtrooms.

Having no further business or public comments, a motion to adjourn the meeting was made by McGuire and seconded by Payne-Hubler.
