City of Mt. Vernon issued the following announcement on Jan. 28.
In 2010, less than 70% of Jefferson County residents were counted in the Census. The county was under counted by approximately 7,036 people. Mt. Vernon makes up roughly 40% of the county population, which would put us at an under count of just over 2,800, and the rest of the county around 4,200. Each person is the equivalent of about $100/yr, or $1,000/census. That means the people of Jefferson County missed out on roughly $7 MILLION in services over the last 10 years. A lower census means less funding for several vital programs in the community. Let’s work together to get everyone counted in 2020!
