City of Mt. Vernon issued the following announcement on April 11.
Republic Services is allowing Mt. Vernon residents to take bulk items to the transfer station at no charge, with the following guidelines:
No more than 200 lbs
Present a copy of your current City of Mt. Vernon water bill
We are still waiting on an alternative plan for yard waste disposal through Republic Services. If Republic is able to offer another solution, we will send out a press release with that information.
Our first leaf-burning week for spring will be April 13-19. The second burn period is May 11-17. A leaf burning fire is permitted between the hours of sunrise and sunset each of those days. No burning shall occur upon any public street, public sidewalk, drainage ditch within the public right-of-way nor any manhole cover or upon the property of another without written permission. All types of fires must be physically attended by a person at least 18 years of age at all times. Burning of any kind may be prohibited during any permitted leaf burning period by order of the Fire Chief due to high winds, dry conditions or other factors.
