Karen Tucker laments Gov. J.B. Pritzker keeps moving the goalposts in the state’s battle to control the COVID-19 pandemic.
“This is no longer about flattening the curve, because for the most part, we’ve already passed that hurdle,” the Franklin County activist told the North Egypt News. “You look at all the science, all the data and it’s clear that the governor is now motivated by other things in the decisions he’s making.”
Pritzker recently doubled down on his decision not to allow most student-athletes to take the field over COVID-19 concerns, sparking protests from parents, students and coaches all across the state.
“It all seems political to me,” she added. “I think schools should be back in session and kids should be allowed to get back to playing because everything we know about the virus tells us that there is very little risk to people of that age group and that the disease is certainly less fatal. When it comes to spots, maybe you can say we won’t have an audience but anything else strikes me as political.”
The Illinois High School Association fired off a letter to Pritzker requesting that they be allowed “to resume control over determining the resumption of sports and activities.” Currently, the two sides are allowing teams across the state to practice this month under specific COVID-19 guidelines.
“You look at where the country is right now with the virus and it makes no sense that we would still be holding out,” Tucker added. “I really think some of these governors are trying to make people as miserable as possible so that they’ll be looking for a change come Election Day. It’s the same reason we’ve seen all the riots and looting being allowed.”
