Sen. Terri Bryant (R-Murphysboro) says democracy has been endangered by what he calls the Democrats' anti-police legislation that advanced through the House and Senate and is awaiting Gov. J.B. Pritzker’s signature.
“Just two weeks ago, on January 13, I stood with my Senate Republican colleagues during our Inauguration Day ceremony, taking the Oath of Office and promising to do everything in my power to represent the hardworking men and women of the 58th District,” Bryant said in a statement. “In the 11th hour of a lame-duck session, Democrat lawmakers in both chambers rushed through legislation that calls for a massive overhaul of our criminal justice system and threatens the law enforcement profession of our state.”
He claims the bill exposes police officers and families to the risk of violence, and he is troubled by a clause includes the elimination of cash bail by 2023.
HB 3653 which was formerly known as 163, was passed by the House and Senate and now awaits House considerations.
