An airport in Marion, Illinois has received thousands of dollars in reimbursement for the airport's recently completed airline terminal project.
Sens. Dick Durbin (D-Ill.) and Tammy Duckworth (D-Ill.), confirmed that Veterans Airport of Southern Illinois welcomed $673,000 that was granted by the Federal Aviation Administration’s Airport Improvement Program.
“Investing in our airports is key to Illinois’ economic success,” Durbin told KFVS channel 12. “The funding announced today will help modernize our aviation infrastructure and improve the experience for Southern Illinois travelers. I will continue working with Senator Duckworth to bring these important investments to our state.”
Duckworth says that investing in local airports is a huge boost to the state's economy.
“Investing in our airports boosts the local economy and strengthens our state’s transportation systems,” Duckworth told KFVS channel 12. “This funding will help ensure Veterans Airport of Southern Illinois has the necessary resources to improve operations and support local jobs. I will continue to advocate for federal funding that makes our aviation system safer and more reliable and a driver of economic development in Southern Illinois.”
Duckworth added that the state's airports are economic generators for Illinois.
“Our Illinois airports are important economic engines for the state, and making sure they continue to have the support they need to operate safely during the COVID-19 pandemic is critical,” Duckworth said in a press release. “I’m proud to join Senator Durbin in announcing this infusion of federal funding, and I’ll keep working to ensure our airports and transportation systems have the funding and support necessary throughout this pandemic and beyond."
The director of the Veterans Airport of Southern Illinois said the project has been ongoing for a decade.
“This funding completes a ten-year $15 million investment that has provided southern Illinois a modern airline terminal facility for years to come,” said airport director Doug Kimmel in a press release.
