Cohesive play leads to successful start this fall for Lady Warriors

Rend Lake College Athletics issued the following announcement on Oct. 4

The Rend Lake Lady Warriors closed out the month with one of the winningest starts to the season in recent memory.

The volleyball team is 12-6 at the midpoint of the fall schedule and 4-3 in Great Rivers conference play. And as the women get ramped up for the back half, Coach Reggie Bateman said he is pleased with how well his team is playing so far this season.

"Everything is going really great," Bateman said. "We have been on quite a roll lately."

Among the highlights during the 2021 campaign is the third-place finish at the Joliet Junior College Invitational Tournament, which was held on Sept. 11 and 12. The Lady Warriors battled several tough teams to finish 3-1 on the weekend.

Bateman said he has been looking to his sophomores who have been setting the pace but also firing on all cylinders.

"My sophomores have been really great," he said. "They have really stepped up."

On their side of the net, the Lady Warriors are averaging more kills, more blocks, assists and more digs per set than last season. Several sophomores are performing at not only at the top of their game but also have been putting up big numbers.

The Lady Warriors have been a force to be reckoned with when it comes to attacks. Middle Hitter Bianca Huddson (Herrin) has an impressive, team-leading hitting percentage at .317. She has racked up 146 kills so far this season.  Sophomore Outside Hitter Alexis Turner (Johnston City) has also been hitting the ball well with a .243 hitting percentage with 160 total kills.

 Freshman Outside Hitter Dylann Torres (Greeley, CO) leads the team with 189 total kills while averaging a .214 hitting percentage.

Setter Paige Hand (Marissa) has totaled 520 assists this fall with an average of 7.65 per set. Libero Abby Wesselmann (Nashville) has brought up big numbers on the defensive end too with 393 digs to date and an average of 5.78 per set. Freshman Grace Numi (Pinckneyville) has added 185 digs.

Bateman said looking at the rest of the fall schedule, he hopes to continue to have similar success.

"I would really like to finish the season healthy and winning," he said. "That is what I really want. I'd always like to stay in the green and stay healthy."

Rend Lake will play at Shawnee on Oct. 5 and are back home to face Kaskaskia College on Oct. 7.

Rend Lake Head Coach Reggie Bateman said the volleyball team is looking to finish strong during the back half of the fall 2021 schedule.
