It’s a big weekend for both Rend Lake basketball teams.
The red-hot Warriors are headed to Springfield to take on Parkland in the NJCAA Central District Tournament Semifinals after beating Spoon River College on Wednesday.
The game is set for 1 p.m. Saturday, March 5, at Lincoln Land Community, and the stakes couldn’t be higher.
Each time these teams met during the regular season, it was a battle decided in six points. The Cobras (18-7) struck first on Nov. 10, winning 76-70, while the Warriors avenged that loss 87-81 when they met at Waugh Gym on Feb. 22.
That win was one of the Warriors' late-season tear. Rend Lake has currently won the last 7 games and 10 out of the last 11 .
The Lady Warriors battled hard but ultimately fell short of the Midwest District Finals championship, losing Thursday 70-56 to Wabash Valley. Rend Lake (23-7) hopes to keep their postseason goals alive by receiving one of the eight at-large spots in the NJCAA national tournament.
The NJCAA Division I Women’s tournament will feature 24 teams with 16 automatic district qualifiers. The at-large selections will be announced during the selection show.
The NJCAA Division I Women’s Basketball Selection Show will take place on Sunday, March 6, at 6:30 p.m. Watch the selection show on the NJCAA network.
