The receiving votes Mount Vernon Nazarene University softball team (19-7, 9-5) lost both games of its doubleheader to Huntington University (6-19, 4-10) on Tuesday, April 5. The Lady Cougars lost game one 12-3 in five innings and game two by a score of 4-1.
Game One
MVNU got out to an early lead in the top of the first when Kaycee Ollis drove in Macee Marcum via a single. But from that point on, it was pretty much all Huntington. The hosts tied things up in the bottom of the first before scoring 11 runs between the third and fifth innings. The only other bright spot in the first game for the Lady Cougars was in the fourth when Ollis drove in Kylee Matern on an infield hit and Maddison Ruhl singled to score Megan Pentz. Nadia Hoffman started the game and went 2.2 innings before she was relieved by Sheridan Sullivan. Both pitchers gave up six runs on a combined 13 hits and five walks.
Game Two
In the second game, the Lady Cougars again scored in the top of the first when Matern scored after Pentz grounded out. The lead stood into the fifth before the hosts scored two on a single and a fielder's choice. Huntington would add two more in the sixth after a Foresters' two-run triple. Maddelyn Wine started game two in the circle for the Cougars. The freshman went 5.1 innings, giving up four runs, all of them earned, on 12 hits. She struck-out four.
