Woodlawn Unit School District 209 Board of Education met March 21.

A regular board meeting was held on March 21, 2024 at Woodlawn Grade School. The meeting was called to order by Jeff Burkett at 6:00 pm. Roll Call was taken with the above members present. Also Present: Eric Helbig, Sara Hays, Sandra Kabat, Brian Gamber, Joyce Frick, Jamie Gordon, Steve Danner, Sara Lamczyk, Eric Lamczyk, Chris Cheatham, Angie Cheatham, Brett Anderson. Amy Orrill arrived during closed session.

Visitor Communication:

Steve Danner inquired about the surplus funds being invested.

A motion was made by Josh Trout and seconded by Michele Chesnek to go into closed session at 6:03 p.m. for the appointment, employment, compensation, discipline, performance, or dismissal of specific employees of the District or legal counsel for the District, including hearing testimony on a complaint lodged against an employee or against legal counsel for the District to determine its validity (5 ILCS 120/2 © (1) and Collective negotiating matters between the District and its employees or their representatives or deliberations concerning salary schedules for one or more classes of employees. (5 ILCS 120/2 ©, (2)).

Members voted: Chad Phelps, yes; Josh Trout, yes; Chase Phelps, yes; Kyle Ritchey, yes; Jeff Burkett, yes; Jacob Frick, yes; Michele Chesnek, yes.

Motion carried.

A motion was made by Michele Chesnek and seconded by Josh Trout to return to open session at 7:58 p.m.

Members voted: Chad Phelps, yes; Josh Trout, yes; Chase Phelps, yes; Kyle Ritchey, yes; Jeff Burkett, yes; Jacob Frick, yes; Michele Chesnek, yes.

Motion carried.

A motion was made by Josh Trout and seconded by Kyle Ritchey to approve the consent agenda items as presented including resignation of Jacelyn Lawless as kindergarten teacher, Angie Cheatham as grade school softball coach and Ben Gordon as peewee coordinator and high school boy basketball assistant coach.

All members present voted yes by a roll call vote.

Motion carried.

A motion was made by Kyle Ritchey and seconded by Jacob Frick to approve WHS Handbook changes 1st reading.

Members voted: Chad Phelps, yes; Josh Trout, yes; Chase Phelps, yes; Kyle Ritchey, yes; Jeff Burkett, yes; Jacob Frick, yes; Michele Chesnek, yes.

Motion carried.

Scheduled Visitor: Brya Scott spoke to the board about a new course next school year “Dystopian Course”.

A motion was made by Chase Phelps and seconded by Michele Chesnek to hire a WGS part-time paraprofessional on step 0.

All members present voted yes by a roll call vote.

Motion carried.

A motion was made by Michele Chesnek and seconded by Kyle Ritchey to rehire all non-tenure certified personnel as presented: Luke Cooper, Hannah Heitmeyer, Michele Smith, Rebeca Webber, Annie Wehrheim, Hailey Whisenant.

All members present voted yes by a roll call vote.

Motion carried.

A motion was made by Chad Phelps and seconded by Chase Phelps to rehire and grant tenure to Leah Bennett, Cindy Brendel, and Katie Schrementi.

All members present voted yes by roll call vote.

Motion carried.

A motion was made by Michele Chesnek and seconded by Chad Phelps to rehire fall and winter coaches as presented: Jacob Frick, WHS Fall baseball; Sara Lamczyk, Jamie Gordon, Lauren White, Hannah Heitmeyer , WHS Volleyball; John Burkett and Alyssa Doza, WGS Girls Basketball; Jeff Burkett, Tony Kirkpatrick, Carson Burkett, WGS Boys basketball; Tabatha Kirkpatrick, Maddie Burkett, WGS cheer; Katie Trout, WGS scholar bowl; Angie Cheatham, Sara Lamczyk, Jamie Gordon, Hannah Heitmeyer, WGS volleyball; Terrance Hooper, WHS/WGS Bowling; Luke Cooper, Alex Beckham, WHS Boys basketball; Matt Patterson, John Burkett, WHS Girls Basketball; Ashton Hapeman, Taylor Maharrey, Sarah King, WHS Cheer; Kris Hodge, WGS Scholar Bowl; Tony Kirkpatrick, WGS Athletic Director; Shane Witzel, WHS Athletic Director.

A motion was made by Jacob Frick and seconded by Josh Trout to hire Kyle Ritchey as WGS baseball coach.

All members present voted yes by a roll call vote.

Motion carried.

A motion was made by Jacob Frick and seconded by Chad Phelps to approve Weston Brockhouse as WHS volunteer boys baseball coach.

All members present voted yes by a roll call vote.

Motion carried.

A motion was made by Kyle Ritchey and seconded by Jacob Frick to accept the WHS Dean of Students contract as presented.

All members present voted yes by a roll call vote.

Motion carried.

A motion was made by Josh Trout and seconded by Michele Chesnek to approve policy updates 2nd reading.

All members present voted yes by a roll call vote.

Motion carried.

A motion was made by Michele Chesnek and seconded by Kyle Ritchey to approve the 2024- 2025 IHSA renewal.

Members voted: Chad Phelps, yes; Josh Trout, yes; Chase Phelps, yes; Kyle Ritchey, yes; Jeff Burkett, yes; Jacob Frick, yes; Michele Chesnek, yes.

Motion carried.

A motion was made by Chad Phelps and seconded by Josh Trout to approve the renewal from Common Goal for the 2024-2025 school year in the amount of $17,632.55. All members present voted yes by a roll call vote.

Motion carried.

VII 5. WGS Robotics club was tabled.

A motion was made by Jacob Frick and seconded by Josh Trout to approve the FY 2025 district calendar as presented: August 11, 2024 the first day and May 21, 2025 the last day. Members voted: Chad Phelps, yes; Josh Trout, yes; Chase Phelps, yes; Kyle Ritchey, yes; Jeff Burkett, yes; Jacob Frick, yes; Michele Chesnek, yes.

Motion carried.

Item VII 7. Additional course was tabled.

A motion was made by Michele Chesnek and seconded by Kyle Ritchey to approve WGS Hvac/RTU bids from Baer Heating and Cooling for $59,883.00.

All members present voted yes by a roll call vote.

Motion carried.

A motion was made by Josh Trout and seconded by Kyle Ritchey to approve FGM agreement for the kindergarten remodel project authorization.

All members present voted yes by a roll call vote.

Motion carried.

A motion was made by Chad Phelps and seconded by Josh Trout to approve WHS old gym floor finishing from Doulos for $8975.00.

All members present voted yes by a roll call vote.

Motion carried.

A motion was made by Michele Chesnek and seconded by Jacob Frick to approve the 2024 mowing bid for Dalton Atkins at $200/mow and $50 for the fields.

All members present voted yes by a roll call vote.

Motion carried.

A motion was made by Jacob Frick and seconded by Josh Trout to adjourn at 9:39 p.m. Members voted: Chad Phelps, yes; Josh Trout, yes; Chase Phelps, yes; Kyle Ritchey, yes; Jeff Burkett, yes; Jacob Frick, yes; Michele Chesnek, yes.
