The Illinois Department of Transportation discussed the information that Severin had summarized in a July 30 news release. IDOT stated: "Drivers are urged to pay close attention to changing conditions and all detour signs prior to the work zone, obey the posted speed limits, refrain from using mobile devices, and be alert for works and equipment."
In a July 31 news release, IDOT explained the I-57 ramp closures at Illinois Route 149 in West Frankfort. The agency said: "The closures are necessary to reconstruct and convert the Illinois 149/I-57 intersections into two modern roundabouts with new lighting and drainage improvements. The $6.3 million project will also include bridge repairs and safety enhancements, with pedestrian and bicycle accommodations. The overall project is expected to be completed in 2025."
These closures and associated work are part of the Rebuild Illinois program. IDOT aims to improve more than 3,200 miles of roads and nearly nine million square feet of bridge decking to enhance road safety for travelers.
