City of Sesser City Council met May 8.
Here are the minutes provided by the council:
The regular meeting of the Sesser City Council was held on Thursday, May 8, 2025. It was called to order by Mayor Ashmore at 6:30 PM. Prayer was led by Terry Miller from the First Baptist Church. The pledge of allegiance was said. Mayor Ashmore asked for a moment of silence in memory of Robyn Hammonds. Mayor Ashmore asked all veterans to remain standing and thanked them for their service.
Clerk Stacey called the roll--Rose Bochantin--here, Dana Laur—here, Wayne Shannon--here, Travis Zettler--absent, David Bates--absent, Jeff Hamburger--here.
A motion was made by David Bates and 2nd by Jeff Hamburger to approve the minutes for the regular April meeting and the special meeting held on May 1, 2025. All those in attendance were in favor of the motion. Motion carried.

TIF items were tabled due to no paperwork at this time.
Agenda Item #2
Mayor Ashmore explained hiring of summer help. A motion was made by David Bates and seconded by Dana Laur to approve the hiring of Brody Genesio and Colton Coffey at $15.00 per hour—Brody will begin after school for 3 hours each day, they will both work full time hours in the summer once school is out. All those in attendance were in favor of the motion. Motion carried.

Agenda Item #4
Mayor Ashmore explained the design engineering bill for the USDA Opera House Annex project. A motion was made by David Bates and seconded by Dana Laur to approve the USDA Opera House Annex design engineering bill #1 to Brown and Roberts in the amount of $12,355.84. All those in attendance were in favor of the motion. Motion carried.
Agenda Item #5
Mayor Ashmore explained the proposal from Northbridge for a laptop for the treasurer’s office. A motion was made by David Bates and seconded by Wayne Shannon to approve the purchase of a laptop for the treasurer’s office from Northbridge in the amount of $1,525.47. All those in attendance were in favor of the motion. Motion carried.
Agenda Item #6
Mayor Ashmore explained the need for a new printer in the police department. A motion was made by Dana Laur and seconded by Jeff Hamburger to approve the purchase of a printer for the police department in the amount of $337.49 from Northbridge. All those in attendance were in favor of the motion. Motion carried.
Attorney Bigler—still working to resolve issues with Sesser Lake.
A motion was made by Rose Bochantin and seconded by Jeff Hamburger to approve the bills as presented by the finance committee. All those in attendance were in favor of the motion. Motion carried.
Mayor Ashmore asked the council to approve treasurer’s and Opera House reports. A motion was made by Jeff Hamburger and seconded by David Bates to approve treasurer’s report and the Opera House board report. All those in attendance were in favor of the motion. Motion carried.
Public comments:
Patty Utley asked if anyone could help with finding a golf cart for the library to use for the Homecoming parade. Alderman Bates said he would make some calls.
Terry Miller—asked if the city workers could clear the grass clippings off main street after cutting as it was covering the bicycle path. Mayor Ashmore said he had already talked to the workers about that.
A motion was made to adjourn the meeting at 6:54 PM by David Bates and 2nd by Wayne Shannon. All those in attendance were in favor of the motion. Motion carried.
